Descon makes the nation proud by commencing the first Independent Power Wind Project in Jhimpir, Sindh. This is the start of a green power revolution in Pakistan. The 50 MW project namely Fauji Fertilizer Energy Company Ltd is an endevour of Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited. Fauji Fertilizer Limited being one of the most progressive industrial groups has once again taken a lead in venturing and pioneering as a developer in the Green Energy Field. The proposed wind farm site is located in the south-eastern part of Pakistan between Hyderabad and Karachi, approximately 100 km inland from the coast in a semi-desert area. The nearest settlements are Jhimpir (2.5 km southeast) and Nooriabad (22 km north-west). This unique green power project promises to be environment friendly, with zero-carbon emissions, powering the nation towards a greener tomorrow.
Pakistan is a country with tremendous potential in the energy resources. It is not only blessed with the natural energy resources like Hydro Power and Natural Gas but also with thousands of Mega Watt potential for Wind Power Projects. It has a coastline of 1,050 km out of which only the potential of 250 km Sindh coastline has been evaluated. Wind energy and power transmission technologies are rapidly evolving to accommodate the impressive growth of wind power.
Descon and Nordex Germany were awarded the 50 MW wind power project on EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) basis by FFCEL. Descon Engineering Ltd and Nordex Germany, EPC partners for this project are proud to be part of this first 50 MW Wind Power Project. Descon with its 3 decades’ experience is the only Pakistani company having the specialized resources to undertake such a unique project. Wind energy is a blend of modern technology and engineering and the award of this project to Descon has strategically placed Descon as a leader in the development of Green Energy in Pakistan.
Moving the turbines was a challenging task; therefore a comprehensive transportation plan was engineered to move 1 complete set (to avoid double handling) at the installation site consisting of 3 Rotor Blades & 1 Nacelle on Multi-Axle Hydraulic Trailers, Hub on low bed trailer and containers on flat bed trailers. 38.5 m long blade has an overhang component for which a safety plan was also devised. All rigging gears and equipment was third party certified. A detailed, delivery inspection was carried out by QA/QC for damages and irregularities during onshore and offshore handling. The consignment of parts was placed according to the stacking plan at Port Passim, so that the components could be delivered as per the SEP (Site Erection Plan).
On 21st of January, 2012 Descon performed the first lift of 1.5 MW wind turbine. Sophisticated cranes perfectly equipped for the erection of wind turbines were acquired for the job. The cranes used are equipped with state-of-the-art electronic control systems, monitoring screens, wind speed indicators and radio transceivers for communication. This 1.5 MW Wind Turbine is supplied by Nordex Germany and all the other equipment including the tubular towers is manufactured at Descon Engineering Ltd Manufacturing works. This localization in manufacturing of Wind Towers has also embarked Descon Engineering Ltd and Pakistan in the field of Wind Energy worldwide.
Descon as an EPC is providing services from project management to engineering and construction, with working with the same stringent standards as entailed in any project.
This project is the first of its kind in Pakistan and shall greatly contribute to the development of wind industry in the country where a substantial growth is expected in the coming future. There are huge opportunities in this market and Descon is determined to maintain a strong presence. This continued commitment has resulted in the signing of EPC contracts with other major investors like Fauji Foundation, Yunus Energy, Gul Ahmed Energy and Metro Wind Power.
